SAXOPHONE COMPETITION GUIDELINES
To apply please send an email to [email protected]. In the subject line please write, “ASRS Competition Application.” In the body of the email provide your name, address, phone number and birthday. Attach documentation of birthday and recordings for the preliminary round. Please label your recordings in the following manner, first initial, last initial, birthday (with no spaces), title of work. - Eligibility
- Participants must be born on or after October 28, 1998
- Application
- All participants must complete the application and submit by June 1, 2018
- A $40 application fee is due by June 1, 2018. Once the application is submitted you will receive directions on how to submit this fee.
- The recordings for the preliminary round must be submitted by June 1, 2018
- Proof of age is required with the application in the form of a scanned driver’s license, state-issued identification card or birth certificate. Should the participant make the live semi-final round, an original of one of these documents must be presented
- An incomplete application or missing any of the deadlines listed above will make the application void
- Preliminary Round
- All applicants will need to submit a recording of Etudes 4 and 9 from the Ferling 48 Famous Studies.
- All applicants will need to submit an additional 5-8 minutes of music that is either solo or solo with piano. Should solo with piano be chosen, the piano will need to be live and not prerecorded or synthesized in any way
- The recordings must be submitted as mp3 files
- Each individual etude or movement of a larger work must be recorded straight through, no editing or splicing is permitted
- Recordings must be properly labeled or the application will be void. See bottom of this document for directions on how to label the files.
- Up to 20 applicants will be selected for the Semi-Final Round which will take place on October 26, 2018 at the AMERICAN SINGLE REED SUMMIT in Kirksville, Missouri.
- Invitations to the Semi-Final Round will be issued via email no later than July 1st, 2018
- All travel and lodging expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant
- The Semi-Final Round will be adjudicated by a jury of four saxophonists
- In the Semi-Final Round all participants will perform Etude Number 13 from the Ferling 48 famous Studies and Movement I from Sonata by Lawson Lunde
- Sonata by Lawson Lunde must be performed with piano and will be the responsibility of the applicant. Pianists will be available for hire from the festival. If you opt to use a festival pianist you will be given one thirty-minute rehearsal plus the performance for $35. Applicants will need to inform the festival no later than September 1st if you will be hiring a festival pianist. Scheduling the rehearsal will be the responsibility of the applicant.
- Up to 5 applicants will be selected for the final round which will take place on October 27, 2018 at the AMERICAN SINGLE REED SUMMIT in Kirksville, MO.
- All travel and lodging expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant
- The Final Round will be adjudicated by a jury of four saxophonists plus special guest, Claude Delangle as the leader of the jury
- In the Final Round all participants will perform Movements I and II and from Sonata by Paul Creston
- The festival will provide a pianist with 45 minutes of rehearsal for the finals performance. Applicants may opt to use their own pianist if they choose.
- Winners will be announced at the evening concert on October 27, 2018
